I spent the day on Saturday with my 7-year-old daughter Lucy. It is very rare for me to spend one-on-one time with my children, even though all the parenting books tell me it is a good idea.
And once again, those damn parenting books are right. It was a wonderful day. A day when I got a chance to see why some people find my daughter so charming.
We weren't fighting over homework or cleaning up her room. We were hanging out and having fun.
The sun was shining and it was pretty warm for a November day in Michigan. As we window shopped, which is something I normally don't do (or enjoy), I felt her little hand grab for mine. Our fingers laced and locked and my world was complete. I bought her little trinkets, which again is something I normally don't do. We tried on scarves and hats and we were silly.
Me and my girl.
But it got even better....
At lunch, Lucy told me she wanted to start an organization for girls and women only. Was she just telling me what I wanted to hear to get me to buy her something at the next store? Maybe. But maybe, just maybe she is a little community organizer in the making.
Me and my little feminist. (dream come true!)
I like to think she went home and wrote in her diary about what a great day we had and maybe "mommy is so amazing." But probably not, because of course back at home it was all about getting ready for bed, picking up the dirty clothes off the floor, not making fun of the brothers. There was some yelling (from both of us). And there were tears (from both of us).
But we'll always have Pizza Hut. And for that I am a grateful.
Speaking of grateful...let's hear it for Thanksgiving (Remember my mission to not forget Thanksgiving). No one can do a holiday like soaps and tv. Below is a little bit cheesy, but fun montage to get everyone in the Thanksgiving mood.
