It's so dark this time of year. I feel like we should all eat dinner at 5 p.m. in our PJ's and then go to bed at 7 p.m. I definitely do not like kids' activities at night during the winter. It feels like midnight when I'm picking up a child from a practice of some sort. Ugh. Maybe that's why when there is a sunny day, it feels so damn good.
In this season of darkness, it's easy for a person like me that teeters on the edge of being all dark and twisty to dive right into that black hole of negativity. I hold on tightly to those sunny moments.
Lucy was making rainbows in her hand with the light shining through the window. She was literally holding the light in her hands. |
Those moments full of light. Shining for me to see all the amazing; all the wonderfully imperfect chaos of my life.
Color my life with the chaos of trouble. -From The Boy with the Arab Strap by Belle and Sebastian I'll totally take this kind of trouble. |
When I was a kid I remember finding a spot where the sun was shining through the window and I'd lie down. Like a a cat, I would nestle into a comfortable position and soak up the rays and the warmth, feeling happy and safe. I told little Lucy my sunny spot story. "Yeah, um, I used to do that too, until I remembered we have heat," she replied unimpressed.
Okay, maybe I make too much out of sunlight, but that's how I roll. And in this wintry season of darkness sunlight rocks, I know this for sure.
Here's some other stuff I know for sure (this week):
- I admit I feel a little less intelligent/mature because I'd rather see This Is 40 over Lincoln. Sure, if I had a ton of time I'd watch both, duh.
- Jimmy Kimmel's Celebrities Read Mean Tweets is hilarious. Here's the latest installment:
- My new/old song obsession is The Boy with the Arab Strap my Belle and Sebastian. My brother makes me a CD every Christmas, yes a CD, we kick it old school. He has eclectic, fun taste in music. His mix is the reason I became obsessed with the Avett Brothers a couple years ago. Well, this is my new/old jam. It's weird, whiny, quirky and I love it. I so relate to this song with lyrics like the one above and gems like this: "I knew you were soft because I saw you dancing. I knew you were hard because I saw you drinking." Hello! Here it is:
- I miss my sick voice. Over the holidays I had a very bad cough/cold that made my voice sound like Zooey Deschanel's and I loved it. I walked around saying "Schmidt!" Everyone loved it. Okay, not everyone. Don't miss the cough, but I do miss the cool hipster voice.
- Poetry is the bomb. Watch this video and you will feel happy. It's every kid from a divorced family's dream, with a modern, wonderful twist. Love this.
- Motherhood is complicated and can be lonely. My friend Greta wrote this touching post about some of the loneliness of motherhood, click here to read it. She reminded me of one of my favorite Lynette Scavo clips from Desperate Housewives (there are a lot). And why I'm so grateful for social media as a way to stay connected and share our stories.
- I am team Hank on Parenthood. Am I the only one? I mean I love Jason Ritter, and his character, but I want him to go have babies with someone his own age. Am I the only one?

Aw, thanks for the shoutout, Angela! And for sharing that song...Erv and I were dancing at the breakfast table. I think that is so cool that your brother makes you a cd every year. Also, every time I see a picture of Lucy, I think she's my kind of girl.
ReplyDeleteThat rainbow picture is stunning. That scene from Desperate Housewives was the MOMENT I fell in love with that show. This is a great post in every way.
ReplyDeleteyou know some good stuff this week! <3 my girls congregate on the heat vent much like you and the sunshine. even when i can see that their cheeks are red and they're taking off socks because they are clearly warm, they don't move.
